Light is Calling (2004)

Dir. Bill Morrison

My attention was just brought to this stunning short film this morning by none other than the AV Club, and it is quite a treat.  It is a collage film of sorts, wherein Bill Morrison re-appropriates a forgotten silent civil-war melodrama “The Bells” and projects it back in its current state of decay.  This film is almost unbearably melancholy, and produces countless gorgeous, thought-provoking images in its scant 8 minute duration, augmented by a beautiful score by Michael Gordon, a renowed post-minimalist composer.  I cannot recommend it enough.

Bonus points: Spend your day with this film running side by side with William Basinski’s “The Disintegration Loops.”
