Great Shot of the Week
Songs From the Second Floor (2000)
Dir. Roy Andersson
Brilliant piece of surrealism from Sweden, certainly one of the best this decade has seen. It is comprised of 46 shots, only one of them with a moving camera, all as rich in detail as this one. And nevermind the film’s particularly fitting subject of economic turmoil; if only an American director could capture the absurdism of it all like Andersson does here. Andersson’s follow up, You, The Living, is finally seeing release in the US soon. If it’s half the film this is, we’re in for a treat.
