Great Shot of the Week

Ratcatcher (1999)

Dir. Lynne Ramsay

Courtesy of one of modern cinema’s most distinct voices, Lynne Ramsay.  Ratcatcher is almost certainly one of the finest childhood films this side of The 400 Blows, and doesn’t waste any time establishing an entirely unique presence in film.  The clash of desolation and innocence recalls many neo-realist films, but Ramsay adds a touch of ever-so-slightly kinetic and stylized movement that it still feels distinctly modern as it harkens back to many of the greats, like Tarkovsky and Davies.

Ramsay’s third film, We Need to Talk About Kevin, is reportedly making an appearance sometime this year.  Something tells me it’s going to be an important one.  In the meantime, enjoy.
