Great Shot of the Week

Crash (1996)

Dir. David Cronenberg

A pivotal point in Cronenberg’s career, a moment where his “body horror” turns inward a bit, complementing his usual compelling commentary on technology’s place in the reshaping of the body with another element.  The fixation is not this time with how the body can destroy itself, but instead an appreciation for how the body heals and sustains itself if kept alive, despite the sordid context surrounding its deformation.  In its own macabre way, it attains for lack of a better word  a kind of “sweetness”, a celebration of life and the complexity of the body, filtered instead through an exploration of the animalistic side of humanity.
