Animated Short of the Week – Eveready Harton in Buried Treasure
Eveready Harton in Buried Treasure (1929?)
Dir. E. Hardon? (Anonymous)
My first introduction to Eveready Harton was in a film class I attended in college, wherein we explored the history of sexuality of cinema, and as a footnote to discussion, we viewed the earliest recorded document of animated pornography put on film. It was on a DVD by itself, with no discernible title or filmmaker; only a sketchy bit of folklore was intact to validate its existence and chronology. I did some rudimentary research on the film after viewing it, to no avail. Well, luckily, in the time it took to resurface in my juvenile brain, the internet caught up and with but a click of a button, here lies Eveready Harton, in all his glory.
This is not a good film. It’s not even a clever film. It’s graphic, childish, and an almost entirely disturbing little piece of bizarre animation, likely produced behind the scenes (or, after dark, if you will) of something more distinguished. It’s also entirely fascinating as a cultural footprint, and it blows my mind that it still feels like I’ve accidentally tripped onto something grand and untapped. So here goes, my gift to you, readers. The ultimate example in my quest to “appreciate neglected films”: The quaint story of a man with a giant boner who’ll fuck anything that moves. More coverage of classy films coming soon. I’m probably going to regret this.
